The reproduction of the purebred dog can take place through ordinary reproduction or selected reproduction:
- In ordinary breeding, the breeder has no obligation to carry out morphological, aptitude or health checks and the pedigree issued to the puppies only documents the family tree of the subject and its belonging to the breed. The quality of these subjects depends on the seriousness of the individual breeders and their commitment in the selection, but it is not officially verified.
- In the selected breeding, the pedigree beyond the geneaology certifies the selection of the breeding stock and is released only to puppies born to parents controlled and enrolled in the ROI (Italian Orini Registry ex LOI). The control carried out on the parents foresees a morphological evaluation carried out in exposures with variable qualifications in the various races, attitudinal and / or character aspects verified in specific tests and health aspects verified with diagnostic checks. Access to the selected breeding is requested by the individual breed associations recognized by ENCI and the selection criteria are proposed by the breed associations and approved or modified by the CTC (ENCI central technical commission, a commission composed of expert breeders and dog technicians, zootechnical representatives and veterinary representatives designated by the MiPAAF Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies); In addition, these reproducers are required to test or deposit DNA.

- The health checks that are mandatory and binding for the purpose of the selected reproduction are carried out by accredited veterinarians on the basis of skills established as required by the ENCI Regulations, approved in 2009 and for hip and elbow dysplasia by the MIPAF 20688 Ministerial Decree of March 12, 2002 updated on May 7, 2009 and subsequent amendments and additions. According to these regulations, veterinarians accredited to carry out official controls for the herd books of purebred dogs must apply for them to the ENCI Herd Book Center with which they sign an agreement in which they declare that they are registered with a provincial order and qualified for exercise of the veterinary profession; be available to carry out checks for the Herd Book for certain pathologies, according to the protocols defined by the CTC; have acquired an adequate specific preparation, demonstrated by specific training experiences; have the diagnostic equipment required for specific diseases; transmit the diagnostic data, relating to the groups of hereditary pathologies, of all the dogs evaluated, regardless of the diagnosis (they must be transmitted even if pathologies are detected), and registered in the genealogical registers and identified on the basis of the data contained in the genealogical certificate at the Central Office of the Herd Book, according to the procedures indicated by it; they must undergo suitability checks for the various diagnostic investigations covered by the specification and ring-tests that allow diagnostic homogeneity.

The ENCI, in accordance with the opinion expressed by the CTC for the issue of certifications referring to genetic pathologies, on the basis of the regulatory protocol for the diagnostic control of genetic pathologies, also recognizes veterinary organizations that sign an agreement in which they declare to accept and follow the specification ENCI; Have the formal collaboration of at least one internationally recognized reference specialist as a graduate of the relevant European College, or of proven international level or with a recognized national university degree accompanied by documented experience, for each of the clinical specialties competent for the diagnosis of genetic diseases subject of this specification. These specialists are available to undergo the tests of suitability for the diagnosis of hereditary oculopathies, hereditary heart diseases and patella luxation indicated by the CTC and are in turn responsible for the selection of veterinarians who carry out the health checks and quality verification. their certifications; they must have the collaboration of at least ten veterinarians capable of carrying out health checks for each of the hereditary diseases, whose diagnostic capacity has been adequately trained and ascertained by the reference specialists; are available to participate in the meetings periodically called by the CTC in order to harmonize the health control methods for the various hereditary diseases both nationally and internationally and to carry out checks on the certifications performed.

- The most significant genetic pathologies for each breed and according to what is proposed by the respective specialized breed associations and approved by the CTC, for which control is envisaged for the purposes of selected reproduction, are hip and elbow dysplasia, dislocation of the patella, aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, oculopathies, heart diseases, blood diseases and congenital deafness. Hereditary diseases detectable through DNA analysis must be diagnosed by laboratories recognized by ENCI on the basis of the technical requirements defined by the CTC.
- Among the general requirements approved by the ENCI Board of Directors, defined on the basis of the proposals provided by the Central Technical Commission which assessed the indications received from the specialized breed associations, provides for each breed admitted to the selected breeding, the morphological qualification that must be obtained in the context of zootechnical checks by subjects who have reached the eighteenth month of age a) In order to contain an excess of imbreeding in small populations, for all those breeds in which the population has a large number of puppies registered / year in the Registers Italian genealogical numbers less than or equal to 100: in order to be validated, the puppies must have four different grandparents; the minimum morphological requirement is Very Good for both males and females. The qualification can also be obtained in events other than rallies and specials, as long as they are judged by specialist judges and with the CAC up for grabs.
b) Puppies born to both breeding stock with grade C hip dysplasia cannot be certified as children of selected parents, as a general rule for all breeds where dysplasia grade C is also admitted. selected breeding stock is tracked in the ENCI database. The computer system will allow consultation of the Register in question through the body's website, producing differentiated pedigrees for subjects born from selected breeding stock. The owner of the dog that enters the Register of Selected Breeders is sent a certificate of distinction by the ENCI.
